Breast Reduction Liposuction

When breasts are significantly larger than average, they can cause chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain and fatigue. The skin beneath the breasts is also prone to irritation and dermatitis, particularly during summer.

Additionally, oversized breasts can restrict daily activities and exercise, and finding well-fitting clothing becomes a challenge. While surgical excision (reduction mammaplasty) has traditionally been the standard approach, numerous published studies have now demonstrated the effectiveness of liposuction for breast reduction, with postoperative patient satisfaction rates exceeding 90%.

Surgical excision can achieve the desired reduction, but it leaves significant scars and carries a higher complication rate, causing many patients to hesitate.

1. Advantages of Breast Reduction Liposuction

  • First, since there is no surgical excision, patients do not need to worry about scars or surgical complications.
  • Second, there is minimal pain, and patients can resume normal daily activities immediately after the procedure with a very short recovery period.
  • Third, there is no damage to the mammary glands, making this an excellent option for women planning future pregnancies or unmarried women.
  • Fourth, breast reduction liposuction preserves the patient's natural breast shape, simply reducing it proportionally for a natural appearance.
  • Fifth, the procedure is more cost-effective compared to surgical excision methods.
  • Sixth, because the mammary tissue remains intact, there is no interference with future breast cancer screenings.

2. Size Reduction Reported in Published Studies

  • Klein, 2000 : 30 - 50%
  • Gray, 2001 : 2 cup sizes
  • Di Giuseppe, 2003 : 3 cup sizes
  • Habbema, 2009 : 51% , 43%

While the limitation is that breast volume cannot be reduced beyond approximately 50%, a reduction of nearly half is substantial, and patient satisfaction rates range from 91% to 99%.

Results vary by individual, but patients with higher body fat percentages tend to have more fatty tissue in the breasts, yielding greater reduction. At Venus Clinic, we achieve an average volume reduction of approximately 40%.

For example, if the breast volume measures 1,000 cc, approximately 400 cc of fat can be removed.

3. Surgical Method

Prior to breast reduction liposuction, the breast volume is measured as shown in the image below. This measurement serves to determine the target aspiration volume and to correct any asymmetry between the two breasts.

For example, if one breast measures 1,200 ml, approximately 40% (480 ml) would be removed, leaving 720 ml. The opposite breast would then be reduced to the same 720 ml, achieving bilateral symmetry. This technique can also be used to correct pre-existing breast asymmetry.

Local anesthetic solution is injected through approximately 5 mm incisions placed within the natural creases of the axilla and the inframammary fold. This provides virtually pain-free fat removal with minimal bleeding, extracting only yellow fat particles.

Fat is removed using micro cannulas with an outer diameter of approximately 2 to 2.5 mm. Venus Clinic employs a handmade micro liposuction technique, ensuring a smooth, natural result without surface irregularities.

Some patients may experience mild discomfort during the local anesthetic injection. If preferred, intravenous sedation can be provided for a more comfortable experience.

One common concern among patients considering breast reduction liposuction is whether the breasts will sag after volume reduction. While liposuction does reduce volume and may leave some excess skin, the skin typically contracts during the healing process, often resulting in a noticeable breast lift as illustrated below.

Therefore, breast liposuction is effective not only for breast reduction but also for correcting ptosis caused by weight loss or age-related sagging in middle-aged women.

The photos below were taken approximately 4 weeks after breast reduction liposuction. The breast shape appears natural with no sagging. Although the images have been pixelated for privacy, the nipple size has also decreased, and further overall size reduction is expected over time.
